Tariffs don’t affect affiliate marketing, or do they? In this time of turmoil, let’s look in our own backyard

Tariffs don't affect affiliate marketing, or do they?

That’s a great question — and it’s one of those “it depends” kind of answers.

At first glance, tariffs don’t directly affect affiliate marketing, because you’re not typically the one buying or selling physical products. You’re just referring people to a vendor and earning a commission. No inventory, no shipping, no customs paperwork — sweet, right?

BUT… there are ripple effects. Here’s where tariffs can sneak in and impact affiliate marketers, especially if you’re promoting physical products:

1. Higher Prices = Lower Conversions

If tariffs increase the cost of a product (say, imported electronics or clothing), the retailer might pass that cost onto the customer. Higher prices can mean fewer sales — and fewer commissions for you.

Example:
You’re promoting a kitchen appliance from a U.S. brand that imports parts from overseas. If tariffs hit those parts, the product’s price goes up. Some buyers might hesitate, and your conversion rate could dip.

2. Dropshipping Affiliates Beware

If you’re working with dropshipping platforms (like AliExpress or similar), tariffs can absolutely slow things down or increase shipping costs. Even though you’re not holding stock, if the customer ends up paying more or waiting longer, your reputation (and earnings) take a hit.

3. Product Availability Can Shift

Tariffs can lead companies to stop offering certain products, switch suppliers, or even change affiliate programs altogether. You may find your best-selling item is suddenly out of stock or discontinued.

4. Opportunity in Digital Products

Here’s the bright side — tariffs don’t touch digital products. Ebooks, courses, software, AI tools, memberships… all tariff-free. For affiliate marketers in the digital space (like promoting Michael Cheney’s programs, for instance), you’re insulated from that entire drama.

Conclusion

Tariffs don’t hit affiliate marketers directly, but if you’re tied to physical product promos, you’re not completely immune. Watch for price shifts, shipping delays, and inventory changes. If you want to dodge all that, digital products are the safe zone.
